faq

What is FXMATE?

FXMATE is a software to statistically assess results generated from standardized biotests. It follows our “Made Totally Easy” principle which targets safe use even with limited statistical expertise while offering flexible use of state-of the-art methods.

What is the technique behind FXMATE?

FXMATE is an R-based Shiny app, letting you use all our favorite R packages for statistical biotest analysis without the need to know any R. The Shiny app is brought to you as a Docker container system, which makes the results reproducible. If you need to reproduce a specific result in the future, you simply go to the FXMATE version you used to produce it, which will be archived on our website.

Why should I use FXMATE?

Due to our distribution model, FXMATE offers reproducible results on every machine without any installation necessary. This also allows rapid updates and implementation of new methods and biotests. All decisions, methods and criteria in FXMATE are based on scientific references or agency documents (for example by the European Food and Safety Authority, EFSA). Furthermore, our software is no blind one-size-fits-all solution but provides you with easy-to-follow advice to identify the best analysis for your data.

Is FXMATE free?

FXMATE is free during our launch phase (i.e., until fall 2025). If you want to support us in keeping FXMATE freely available, contact us. If you register for free, you will not be automatically moved to a paid plan.

Why do I have to refresh FXMATE before uploading a different data set?

This is a safety feature to warrant 100% reproducible analyses. FXMATE has inputs that dynamically appear and adjust to your data, guiding your way toward the best possible analysis. To avoid any carryover of old settings to the new data (e.g., due to caching), FXMATE always starts with cleaned-up settings.

Which guidelines are supported?

We currently support a limited number of guidelines (OECD 201, 202, 203, and 211) but are eager to substantially extend this selection in the coming months.

I am overwhelmed by all this amazing functionality. Is there a documentation?

A documentation with full statistical background and user instructions will be available shortly.

Can I use any data in FXMATE?

For now, only our custom templates are supported. Support for free formats can be implemented in the future. If you need this feature, feel free to contact us.

How do I get FXMATE templates?

Just create your free account and download them from your MATE Dashboard.

Where can I report bugs or make feature/guideline requests?

Just contact us via our contact form.

Why does FXMATE stop during the analysis when I am inactive for a while?

This points to an active power saving mode of your browser. A quick online search on 'how to deactivate power saving for <your browser>' will guide you to a solution. FXMATE was tested on Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox with no issues when power saving features were turned off.

FXMATE is weirdly scaled on my device. What should I do?

We suggest a minimal screen resolution of 1600x900px. If you still have problems, nearly every browser lets you control the zoom level. If elements are too big and overlap, zoom out. If elements are too small and non-readable, zoom in.

FXMATE seems to be stuck. What should I do?

FXMATE is Shiny-based and hence uses a technique called “lazy evaluation” that ensures computational and power efficiency. In practice this means that processes are only started when required (for example, when their output is in view). It can happen that you change panels or click inputs, while a process is running and the app appears to be stuck. This is solved by waiting 5-10 seconds and re-clicking something to evoke evaluation.
